Operation Rock 'n' Roll Tour 1991
Press Release:
"OPERATION ROCK & ROLL" SUMMER TOUR LAUNCHED BY ALICE COOPER AND JUDAS PRIEST:
NORTH AMERICAN TOUR ALSO FEATURES MOTORHEAD, DANGEROUS TOYS AND METAL CHURCH
The countdown to "Operation Rock & Roll" has begun!
The summer's premier rock event is set to begin July 9th in Salt Lake City, as Columbia and Epic recording groups Judas Priest, Alice Cooper, Motorhead, Dangerous Toys and Metal Church join forces for a once-in-a-lifetime event. "Operation Rock & Roll" brings together Sony Music and Pace Concerts for this North American package tour, underscored by the combined firepower of the Columbia and Epic labels.
One of the many projects planned to highlight the tour is the "Operation Rock & Roll" promotion-only cassette which, in addition to the five touring bands, will also include music from other Columbia and Epic acts: Alice In Chains, Cycle Sluts From Hell, Fishbone, Katmandu, The Lost, 'Love/Hate, Mind Funk, Suicidal Tendencies and War Babies. A quarter-million of these cassettes will be used for giveaways in conjunction with local dates, with the first few thousand early attendees at every show getting a free copy. It will also be available via select retail outlets and local radio stations.
Other activities include a special "Operation Rock & Roll" edition of MJI Broadcasting's syndicated "Metalshop" program, scheduled to air over July 4th weekend, featuring music and interviews with the touring acts. Details of additional promotions and festivities — including a "Rock the Vote" booth at every show — will be revealed in the weeks ahead.
Paving the way for the summer campaign will be the July 2nd release of the "Operation Rock & Roll" home video from SMV (Sony Music Video), featuring clips on all five bands. Individually:
JUDAS PRIEST: With six RIAA gold and five platinum albums to their credit, Priest continues to reign as one of metal's most controversial bands. They've been touring non-stop since the fall release of their 14th album, Painkiller, which surpassed RIAA gold on the power of its title-track video and follow-up, "A Touch of Evil." Known for cruising onstage aboard the familiar Harley-Davidson Lowrider, Judas Priest lead singer Rob Halford is joined by guitarists K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton, bassist Ian Hill and drummer Scott Travis.
ALICE COOPER: The King of Shock Rock is back on the road just as his new Epic album and single are released, both titled Hey Stoopid, following the worldwide 1989 multi-platinum success of Trash, with its top 10 single, "Poison." Hey Stoopid will soon take place among the ten RIAA gold and seven RIAA platinum albums already to Alice's credit. Alice's reinvention of the rock concert as theatrical spectacle and his outrageous stage shows are legendary, and justly so. Classics such as "School's Out," "I'm 18," and "Welcome To My Nightmare," and his onstage executions have become trademarks.
MOTORHEAD: THe quintessential heavy metal band, Motorhead is the definition of the genre. Breaking new ground with 1916, their first studio recording in four years, the unmistakable Motorhead imprint is heard on traditional blues, boogie woogie, and a ballad. Although the album ventures into uncharted territory, the press has unanimously acknowledged the band's capacity for poignant lyrics, searching musicianship and an intelligent sense of humor. Motorhead is: Lemmy (bass/vocals), Wurzel (guitar), Wizzo (guitar) and PHilthy Animal Taylor (drums).
DANGEROUS TOYS: The Austin, Texas-based quintet broke through with "Teas'n Pleas'n" and "Scared" (from their self-titled debut album) and plenty of cross-country touring. The new album is Hellacious Acres produced by Roy Thomas Baker and heralded with a new single and video, "Gimme' No Lip," plus standout tracks "Best of Friends" and "sticks and stones." The Toys are lead singer Jason McMaster, guitarist Danny Aaron and Scott Dalhover, bassist Mike Watson, and drummer Mark Geary.
METAL CHURCH: Their background spans a decade, beginning with the earliest fusion of punk anger and traditional metal. Based in Seattle for most of its history, the band has undergone several personnel changes but their Epic album, The Human Factor, presents the best Metal Church yet: Mike Howe (vocals), John Marshall and Craig Wells (guitars), Duke Erickson (bass), and Kirk Arrington (drums).

In Los Angeles, ALICE COOPER kicked off "Nightmare On Your Street" with an all-stops-out 8:45 a.m. live set in the parking lot of radio station KLOS that brought rush-hour traffic to a standstill as it was broadcast live on the city's #1 morning show. In Detroit, ALICE COOPER will perform live on the rooftop of a Sound Warehouse store; in Towson, Maryland, he'll rock on the steps of the courthouse. The "Nightmare On Your Street" tour climaxes on Friday the 13th of September in New York City.
