'Circus' And Alice
Author: Sam Sutherland
Alice Cooper was on the other end of the phone, while Circus Magazine correspondent Kathy Stein popped questions at him on the touchy subject of venereal disease. Ms Stein had called Alice from Circus World Headquarters for an exclusive interview on a subject no one had ever bothered to think about in connection with rock's favorite ghoul. The interview, however, was not as exclusive as expected. Arriving early for an interview, a reporter from an English underground paper blatantly eavesdropped on Alice's phone conversation. The results were printed out of context before Circus could get to print. Cooper press representatives assured Circus that in the future Alice would be kept in a sound-proofed box while conducting interviews, so less original reporters would not be able to steal material.
Circus editor Steven Gaines was the recipient of a Marilyn Monroe biography by Norman Mailer. The book arrived by messenger one day. Inscribed on the title page — "Thanks for everything. Love, Alice Cooper."
