Iron Butterfly here next Friday
Author: Jon Sargent
There's another "heavy" (and I use the word lightly) event set for Memorial Coliseum Friday night. And despite the state fairground crew's obvious disdain at the word, it should be a real rocker.
Set to headline the event will be the Iron Butterfly. This will be the quartet's third Valley appearance the last year.
THEIR MAJOR claim to fame, however, is the never-ending rendition of "Ina-Gadda-da-Vida," which also just earned them a platinum disk. Other outstanding credits held by the combo include to gold LPs, an upcoming movie, and a new single entitled, "I Can't Help But Deceive," set for release next month.
Sharing the stage with Butterfly will be Alice Cooper, once known locally as the Spiders.
Cooper is one of those groups you can't quite classify, if only because no such word has been written yet. Frank Zappa, of the Mothers, claims, "They are the ultimate in psychedelic bands."
To give you a general idea, though, lead singer, Alice Cooper is a guy, and has a tendency towards wearing dresses and slacks. Their latest (and first) album is entitled "Pretties For You" on Straight Records.
Rounding out the bill will be Zephyr, a Denver based band. They recently caused a semi-stir at the Aquarius Southwest pop theatre.
